Iloilo City strengthens youth role in governance through ‘G Na Youth’ program
The Iloilo City Government is giving young Ilonggos a bigger role in local governance through the “G Na Youth: G Na G sa Public Service” Youth Leadership Training, an initiative aimed at strengthening youth participation in community development and public service.
The program provides young people with a platform to share their ideas, raise community concerns, and take part in developing solutions to issues affecting their communities.
Mayor Raisa Treñas institutionalized the initiative through Executive Order No. 084, which she signed on August 12 in line with the celebration of International Youth Day.
“Indi ko gusto nga ang kabataan mangin subject sang problema—gusto ko nga kamo mismo ang mangin kabahin sang solusyon,” Treñas told the youth participants.
The city government said the initiative forms part of its push for more inclusive governance, where young people are viewed not merely as beneficiaries of government programs but as active partners in decision-making and community building.
Youth organizing efforts have also reached the city’s relocation and housing communities. At present, 27 organized youth associations have been established in these areas with the support of the Iloilo City Local Housing Office (ICLHO).
Joining the city’s youth empowerment advocacy are City Councilor Miguel Treñas, Executive Assistant on Youth Affairs Mcbee Malones, and former National Youth Commission chair Leon Flores III.
Through the program, the city government hopes to provide more opportunities for young Ilonggos to develop their leadership skills and become actively involved in public service.
The initiative underscores the city’s continuing effort to give the ideas, voices, and initiatives of the youth a place in shaping a more inclusive Iloilo City.
