The newly constructed Arevalo Public Market officially opened Friday, December 5 in a ceremony led by Mayor Raisa Treñas, together with members of the City Council and market vendors, marking a significant milestone for the district and the city’s ongoing infrastructure development.

“This market is beautiful even from the outside. Our vendors will no longer face difficulties. And to everyone who supported the realization of this project, thank you very much,” Mayor Raisa said during her message.

Inspired by the district’s iconic Paraw Regatta Festival, the new market features a modern architectural design resembling the sail of a paraw—symbolizing movement, culture, and heritage.

The two-level facility can now accommodate 117 existing vendors and 179 new kiosks, supported by parking spaces for 36 cars and 12 motorcycles. It is also equipped with essential facilities such as access stairs, an elevator, delivery and service bays, designated PUJ loading and unloading zones, 50 KVA solar panels, 300 KVA generator sets, sprinkler and PA systems, a rainwater harvesting facility, and CCTV cameras. A Market Administration Office and CENRO Office are located at the mezzanine, along with a septic vault, cistern tanks, individual grease traps, and an STP for improved sanitation.

The project was initiated under the administration of former Mayor Jerry Treñas and continued by Mayor Raisa Treñas, emphasizing the city’s commitment to sustainable and long-term development.

In a forward-looking move, the city ensured the building’s foundation is ready for a possible third-floor expansion. “The foundation of this building is ready for a third floor. The contractor prepared it for possible future expansion,” Mayor Raisa added.

Designed to be open, well-ventilated, and climate-resilient, the new market features elevated floors, high ceilings, and wide walkways to create a functional, modern, and comfortable space for both vendors and consumers. Its location beside the historic Arevalo Plaza further enhances the district’s cultural and commercial landscape.

Rey Villacastin, President of the Arevalo Public Market Vendors Association, expressed gratitude to the city government on behalf of all vendors.

“To my fellow vendors, our new market is a reminder that we are part of Iloilo City’s progress. Let us maintain its cleanliness, order, and beauty,” Villacastin said.
