Iloilo City on full alert as Typhoon Uwan approaches
Mayor Raisa Treñas urges Ilonggos to stay vigilant and prioritize safety
The Iloilo City Government, through the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC), is on full alert as it prepares for the possible effects of Typhoon Uwan, which is expected to intensify in the coming days.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Uwan may strengthen into a strong typhoon and bring strong to very strong winds by Sunday.
Mayor Raisa Treñas, who chairs the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC), spearheaded the Pre-Disaster Risk Assessment meeting on Friday. She reminded residents not to be complacent.
“Bisan wala pa man gina-forecast nga mag-ulan sang mabaskog diri sa Iloilo, hindi kita dapat magpakampante, kay posible pa nga maglain ang iya nga dalagan kag kabaskugon sang hangin sa masunod nga mga adlaw,” Mayor Treñas said.
She added that the City’s Operations Center (OpCen) has issued warnings about possible flooding in low-lying areas, noting that the ground remains saturated and rivers are still full due to the recent effects of Typhoon Tino.
“That’s why we are already preparing early,” she added. “Our CDRRMO, together with the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) and all response clusters, are now on full alert,” she said.
The city has begun repacking food supplies for quick deployment in case evacuation or relief operations become necessary. Coordination with PAGASA and other national agencies is ongoing to ensure timely updates and advisories.
Mayor Treñas urged the public to remain calm yet cautious, and to rely only on official information sources. (Iloilo City PIO)
