In line with its commitment to inclusive education, the Iloilo City Government, led by Mayor Raisa S. Treñas, distributed financial assistance to 50 Persons with Disability (PWD) scholars during a ceremony held at the Iloilo City Hall on December 5.

Mayor Treñas emphasized the importance of supporting PWD students to ensure they can continue their education and pursue their dreams. She reiterated her vision of an inclusive city where everyone is given equal opportunities to succeed.

“Ginhatag naton ang financial assistance sa 50 naton ka PWD scholars. Importante gid ini para mapadayon ninyo ang inyo pag-eskwela kag indi kamo ma-untat sa inyo mga damgo. Ang akon goal, mangin inclusive ang aton syudad — ang tanan mahatagan oportunidad. Pangabay ko lang — padayon lang gid sa pagtuon,” the mayor said, adding that the city government is proud of the scholars’ hard work and determination for their families and their future.

The financial aid is part of the PWD Scholarship Program of the Iloilo City Government, implemented through the Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO). The program was launched during the administration of former Mayor Jerry P. Treñas and continues under Mayor Raisa S. Treñas to provide financial support to qualified PWD students who are currently enrolled in college or university.

Under the program, each PWD scholar receives a financial grant of ₱5,000 per semester, funded by the PDAO, to help defray educational expenses. To qualify, applicants must be enrolled in any college or university for the current semester, maintain passing grades from the previous year with no failing marks, and have no incomplete grades in any subject.

Applicants are required to submit the following documents: a Certificate of Eligibility from the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), a case study from the CSWDO, a Certificate of Enrollment issued by the school registrar or dean, grades from the previous semester showing no failures or incomplete marks, a photo or copy of the PWD ID, and a Barangay Certificate of Indigency.

Since its implementation, the PWD Scholarship Program has consistently helped PWD students pursue higher education, benefiting 39 scholars in 2023 and 43 scholars in 2024, further strengthening the city’s efforts to promote inclusive growth through education.
