Gov. Defensor Lauds Transformation of Iloilo City Public Markets
Governor Arthur R. Defensor Jr. has expressed admiration for the significant transformation of Iloilo City’s major public markets, citing their redevelopment as a model of effective leadership and public-private collaboration.
In a statement, Defensor said he was “truly amazed” by the modernization of the Iloilo Central Market, Iloilo Terminal Market, and other public markets in Jaro and La Paz, noting how these facilities have evolved into modern, functional hubs that Ilonggos can be proud of.
The governor credited the strong leadership of former Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas, whose initiatives were sustained and advanced by Mayor Raisa Treñas. According to Defensor, the continued vision and commitment of the city’s leadership played a crucial role in revitalizing public markets and elevating the overall market experience for both vendors and consumers.
Defensor also highlighted the redevelopment of the Central and Terminal Markets as a successful example of a Public-Private Partnership, made possible through collaboration with SM Prime Holdings. He emphasized that the project demonstrates how cooperation between government and the private sector can deliver tangible benefits to communities.
“The upgraded facilities not only create new opportunities for long-time vendors and emerging businesses, but also provide market-goers with greater comfort, convenience, and variety under one roof,” the governor said.
He added that the Province of Iloilo deeply appreciates the redevelopment efforts, stressing that modernized public markets help empower small and medium enterprises and support the growth of homegrown brands. Defensor said these improvements ultimately strengthen the local economy and improve the quality of life of Ilonggos.
