A beloved historic plaza has gained a new purpose as Iloilo City officially opened its third Outdoor Library at Jaro Plaza, further strengthening its commitment to accessible education and community-centered public spaces.

Following the success of the first two outdoor libraries at Plaza Libertad and Molo Plaza, the newest installation at Jaro Plaza continues the city’s initiative of bringing books closer to the people — beyond the walls of traditional libraries.

The opening ceremony, held January 30, gathered local officials, community partners, and young learners to celebrate another milestone in Iloilo City’s literacy and education programs. Leading the event were Councilor Miguel Treñas and Executive Assistant Matty Treñas, alongside project donor representatives and community partners who helped make the initiative possible.

Children from Bahay Bulilit Daycare Center added life and excitement to the event as they joined storytelling sessions led by Ms. Tess Lopez of the Vallehermoso Helping Hands Foundation. The celebration continued with interactive activities, including a Q&A session and coloring activities spearheaded by Councilor Treñas, while performances from the Vallehermoso Bamboo Ensemble provided a festive atmosphere for families and park visitors.

The mobile library itself reflects a collaborative community effort. It was fabricated by students and staff of the Technical Institute of Iloilo City (TIIC), under the leadership of School Administrator Maria Mathilde Treñas, showcasing both craftsmanship and community service.

The library unit was donated by the Ledesma family, while the Lopez family contributed books to build the initial collection, highlighting how private citizens and institutions can support public initiatives that benefit the wider community.

Strategically placed within Jaro Plaza, the outdoor library transforms a traditional leisure space into a hub for learning and reflection. Students, families, seniors, and visitors can freely access books while enjoying the park, encouraging casual reading and making productive use of public spaces.

With installations now at Plaza Libertad, Molo Plaza, and Jaro Plaza, Iloilo City continues to pioneer innovative urban development that places education, accessibility, and community engagement at the forefront.

More than just a reading corner, the outdoor library symbolizes what collaboration between government, educational institutions, and private families can achieve — making knowledge accessible to everyone, right in the heart of the community.

And as these libraries continue to grow across the city, Iloilo proves once again that public spaces can inspire not only relaxation, but also learning and imagination.
